Lesotho Launches Natural Capital Accounting Project with District Leaders

The Minister of Environment and Forestry, Hon. Letsema Adontsi, officially opened the Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) project day meeting, marking a significant step in managing Lesotho’s natural resources sustainably. The event brought together governors from Thaba-Tseka, Maseru, and Berea districts, local government council leaders, and officials from key government departments responsible for natural resource management.

During the meeting, Hon. Adontsi emphasized the importance of accounting for natural capital to inform policy, guide sustainable development, and ensure that natural resources contribute effectively to economic growth. The Minister noted that the project will provide a clear picture of Lesotho’s environmental assets, including land, forests, water, and biodiversity, helping policymakers make data-driven decisions.

District governors and local council leaders discussed the operational aspects of the project, including data collection, reporting, and community engagement. They highlighted the need for collaboration between national and local authorities to accurately capture the value of natural resources and integrate it into development planning.

Government officials from the environment, forestry, and related sectors shared insights on how NCA can improve resource management, enhance conservation efforts, and support climate resilience initiatives. The discussions stressed that effective natural capital accounting requires consistent monitoring and the inclusion of all stakeholders, from local communities to national agencies.

The NCA project is expected to provide a comprehensive framework for assessing Lesotho’s natural assets, supporting sustainable land use, and guiding investments in environmental conservation. By involving district leaders and local councils, the initiative ensures that natural capital management is grounded in local realities while aligning with national development goals.

This meeting reinforces Lesotho’s commitment to sustainable resource management and highlights the role of data-driven approaches in promoting environmental stewardship and long-term economic growth.
