Lesotho’s Health Minister Highlights National Priorities at U.S. Global Health Diplomacy Meeting

Honourable Minister of Health Selibe Mochoboroane represented Lesotho at the Future of U.S. Global Health Diplomacy and Assistance meeting in New York on 22 September 2025. The event was part of the 80th UN General Assembly and organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Global Initiative on HealthCare and the Economy (GIHE).

The dialogue focused on the State Department’s America First Global Health Strategy and included participation from five African countries. The meeting emphasized Africa’s role in preventing infectious disease outbreaks and promoting global stability.

Key objectives included integrating and coordinating health programs, building local capacity for sustainable health systems, and leveraging health assistance. The meeting highlighted the SAFER initiative (Stop Outbreaks, Contain, and Respond) and the STRONGER framework (Strengthen Bilateral Relationships with Countries) to guide strategic health interventions.

Under the U.S. Global Health Strategy, funding will support HIV, TB, and malaria medicines and salaries for health workers in Africa through bilateral agreements. Additional support includes data systems, technical assistance, and capacity building to enable governments to manage critical health functions independently.

Minister Mochoboroane emphasized Lesotho’s commitment to strengthening its health systems and collaborating with international partners to improve access to essential medicines and services. The engagement reinforces Lesotho’s active role in global health diplomacy and its pursuit of sustainable health outcomes for its population.
