Prime Minister Sam Matekane’s Europe Trip Cancelled Amid Middle East Conflict

Lesotho’s Prime Minister, Sam Matekane, has had to abruptly cancel his official visit to Brussels and Spain due to escalating conflict in the Middle East that has disrupted international air travel.
The Prime Minister departed Lesotho on Monday with plans to attend important meetings in Europe but was forced to return home while still at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. This decision came after authorities confirmed that key air routes passing through Qatar were no longer safe for travel amid the intensifying regional hostilities.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane, provided details on the sudden change of plans. “The Prime Minister was scheduled to participate in a series of health-related meetings in Brussels, aimed at strengthening partnerships and exploring collaborative solutions for Lesotho’s health sector,” he explained. “He was also set to attend the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in Spain.”
However, with the ongoing conflict disrupting critical flight paths, including those through Qatar, the government deemed it unsafe and impossible for the Prime Minister to continue his journey. Minister Mpotjoane said, “The Prime Minister had to make the difficult decision to return home after we were informed that the Qatar flight path was no longer viable due to the intensifying war situation.”
The cancellation underscores the far-reaching impact of the Middle East conflict on global travel and diplomacy, affecting even official state visits and international cooperation efforts.
The government confirmed that alternative arrangements and virtual participation options are being explored to ensure Lesotho remains engaged in the scheduled international forums.
Prime Minister Matekane is expected to resume his international commitments once conditions permit safe travel.
This development highlights the challenges faced by leaders in navigating global uncertainties while continuing to pursue national development priorities on the international stage.
