Prime Minister Matekane Commits to Acting on Inmate Escape Report Following Parliamentary Presentation

Prime Minister Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane has pledged full implementation of the recommendations outlined in the report from the Commission of Inquiry into the recent escape of inmates from the Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI). The Prime Minister made this assurance upon officially receiving the report at the State House on Friday from Justice Realeboha Mathaba, who chaired the Commission.
Speaking at the handover event, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude for the work undertaken by the Commission and affirmed that he would thoroughly study the findings before presenting them to Parliament. “Once the report has been presented to Parliament, I will direct the Minister of Law and Justice to ensure all recommendations are implemented without delay,” he stated.
The inquiry was commissioned in response to public concern and growing scrutiny following a high-profile inmate escape, which raised serious questions about security protocols and administrative oversight within Lesotho’s correctional system.
Justice Mathaba, while handing over the document, emphasized the independence and integrity of the Commission’s work. He assured the nation that the report was compiled objectively and transparently, saying, “This report was prepared without fear, favour, or prejudice.”
According to Justice Mathaba, the report is comprehensive and divided into four major sections: safety conditions at Maseru Central Correctional Institution, detailed analysis of the inmate escape, an assessment of the subsequent search operation, and an overview of the broader administrative framework within the Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS).
The executive summary of the report includes actionable recommendations aimed at addressing security lapses, improving operational procedures, and ensuring accountability at all levels within the correctional system.
The Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to transparency and accountability, noting that he will take the lead in unpacking the contents of the report to the public after it is tabled in Parliament. “This matter affects national security and public confidence in our justice system. We owe it to the nation to respond with firm and decisive action,” he said.
As Lesotho awaits the public release and parliamentary debate of the report, all eyes are on the government’s next steps. The Prime Minister’s assurance signals a potential turning point in strengthening oversight and restoring public trust in the country’s correctional institutions.
