Ministry of Education and Training Moves to Expand TVET to Combat Youth Unemployment

The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) has announced plans to expand Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a key strategy to tackle the rising unemployment rate among youth in Lesotho. This initiative was revealed by MoET Minister Professor Ntoi Rapapa during the Prime Minister’s press conference on Monday afternoon.

Addressing the pressing issue of youth unemployment, Professor Rapapa emphasized the ministry’s commitment to equipping young people with practical skills that match the demands of the job market. He explained that expanding TVET programs will provide more opportunities for youth to gain hands-on experience and improve their employability.

A significant part of the expansion includes the introduction of trade tests, which will certify individuals who are currently undergoing on-the-job training. This certification process is designed to validate the skills acquired during training and empower young people to start or grow their own businesses.

“The trade tests will give those on job training the chance to receive official certificates,” Minister Rapapa stated. “This will not only increase their credibility but also enable them to contribute meaningfully to the economy.”

The ministry’s focus on TVET reflects a broader strategy to develop a skilled workforce capable of driving economic growth and reducing poverty. By promoting practical education, MoET aims to bridge the gap between education and employment, ensuring that youth have the tools they need to succeed.

The government’s push to strengthen TVET programs has been met with support from various stakeholders, including industry leaders and development partners. Many believe that enhancing vocational training will play a crucial role in addressing unemployment challenges and fostering entrepreneurship among young Basotho.

As the ministry continues to roll out these initiatives, there is hope that the expansion of TVET will open new pathways for youth empowerment and create a more resilient economy. The coming months will be critical in implementing these changes and tracking their impact on the youth employment landscape in Lesotho.
