Lesotho’s Minister of Tourism Leads Visit to Thaba-Bosiu Cultural Monument, Reinforcing Commitment to Heritage Preservation

The Honourable Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Motlatsi Maqelepo, accompanied by Principal Secretary Mrs. Mantiti Khabo, the Director of Tourism, a delegation of officials, and key stakeholders, recently embarked on an important visit to the historic Thaba-Bosiu Cultural Monument.

This significant visit underscores the Ministry’s unwavering dedication to preserving Lesotho’s rich cultural heritage, empowering local communities, and boosting cultural tourism across the country.

Thaba-Bosiu holds a revered place in the hearts of Basotho people as the spiritual and historical birthplace of the nation. Its majestic cliffs and plateau served as a fortress and gathering place during the time of King Moshoeshoe I and have since become a powerful symbol of unity, pride, and resilience for Lesotho.

During the visit, Minister Maqelepo commended the ongoing efforts to maintain and revitalize the monument, highlighting how such projects safeguard the legacy of Basotho ancestors while promoting tourism opportunities that benefit local communities.

“Our cultural landmarks like Thaba-Bosiu are not only reminders of our history but also living inspirations for future generations,” the Minister said. “Nurturing and preserving these sites ensures that the story of our nation continues to thrive and that we share it proudly with visitors from around the world.”

The Ministry’s initiative also focuses on enhancing visitor experiences through improved facilities, educational programs, and community involvement, positioning Thaba-Bosiu as a premier cultural tourism destination in Southern Africa.

As Lesotho continues to invest in its cultural assets, the visit to Thaba-Bosiu reflects a broader vision of sustainable tourism development rooted in heritage conservation and community empowerment.

This landmark excursion reinforces Lesotho’s commitment to honoring its past while building a prosperous future for the Basotho people and the nation’s tourism industry.
