Lesotho’s Information Minister Highlights ICT Opportunities for Youth in Fight Against Unemployment

Lesotho’s Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI), Miss Nthati Moorosi, says her Ministry offers numerous opportunities for youth, particularly in the area of Information Communication Technology (ICT).

She made these remarks during a press conference held at LTV Studios on Monday. The briefing was led by Prime Minister Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane as part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle the country’s high youth unemployment rate.

Addressing the press, Miss Moorosi emphasized that while the government is presenting a comprehensive plan to combat unemployment, her Ministry plays a vital role in equipping young people with digital skills and employment pathways in the ICT sector.

She explained that a detailed report on ICT-related opportunities will be presented during the upcoming Youth Dialogue, which is scheduled for June 18, as announced by the Prime Minister. This report will outline specific programs and initiatives designed to open doors for youth in technology-driven careers.

Miss Moorosi revealed that among the current initiatives, the Ministry is investing in new infrastructure for Lesotho Television (LTV) to introduce additional broadcast channels. This expansion will create new employment opportunities as more workforce will be required to manage and produce content for the expanded platform.

In addition to this, the Ministry is engaged in various projects related to software development and applications, offering further avenues for young people to participate in the growing digital economy.

Supporting this call for accelerated action, Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane, Minister of Finance and Development Planning, urged government ministries — especially those identified as key to job creation, such as the Ministry of Information — to fast-track the implementation of these initiatives.

The press conference was attended by several Cabinet Ministers and media personnel from various sectors, underscoring the collaborative effort underway to address the challenges of youth unemployment in Lesotho.

The government remains committed to ensuring that young people are equipped with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in the modern digital landscape, positioning ICT as a crucial pillar in its employment strategy.
