Lesotho’s Disaster Management Authority Issues Snowfall Warning: Public Urged to Stay Vigilant

The Disaster Management Authority (DMA) in Lesotho has issued a strong public warning ahead of heavy snowfall expected from Thursday. This follows an official advisory from the Lesotho Meteorological Services (LMS), predicting significant and potentially hazardous snowfall, especially in the country’s highland regions.

In a statement released by the DMA, the public is strongly encouraged to reconsider and, if possible, cancel any long-distance travel plans, particularly trips that involve the mountainous areas. The warning emphasizes that conditions in the highlands will be especially treacherous, with a high risk of road closures and dangerous driving conditions.

DMA Public Relations Officer, Ms. Mahlape Koali, speaking to the media, urged the nation to remain alert and cautious during this period of adverse weather. “We are appealing to everyone to take this warning seriously. The snowfall we are expecting is descriptive and hazardous. It is important for people to stay indoors where possible and wait until the snow has safely defrosted before attempting to travel,” she said.

Motorists who still need to travel, especially to the highlands, are advised to exercise extreme caution. Ms. Koali highlighted the dangers posed by wet and slippery roads, warning that driving conditions could quickly deteriorate with little notice. “We urge drivers to stay updated on the latest weather reports and avoid unnecessary travel,” she added.

Authorities are also advising residents to stock up on essential supplies, prepare for potential disruptions, and remain in close contact with local weather updates over the coming days.

As the nation prepares for this extreme weather event, the DMA and LMS continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as needed.
