Lesotho Seeks Support to Boost Agricultural Productivity at China-Africa Economic Trade Expo

The Government of Lesotho is stepping up efforts to transform its agricultural sector, aiming to enhance productivity for both local consumption and commercial export. Speaking at the 4th China-Africa Economic Trade Expo currently underway in Changsha, China, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane, highlighted the country’s commitment to modernising agriculture and tackling food security challenges.

In his address, Mr. Mpotjoane emphasized that to achieve these goals, Lesotho requires targeted support in climate-smart agriculture, advanced irrigation systems, and technical capacity-building for both government institutions and local farmers.

“Our agricultural sector holds immense potential, but to unlock it, we need access to modern tools, technologies, and expertise,” said Mr. Mpotjoane. He underscored the importance of building institutional strength within the Ministry of Agriculture while equipping farmers with the skills and knowledge to adapt to changing climatic conditions.

Among the key initiatives outlined was the development of market aggregation centres for smallholder farmers. According to Mr. Mpotjoane, these centres will serve as vital hubs that connect rural farmers—often isolated by poor infrastructure and limited market access—to broader markets where they can secure better prices for their produce.

“The establishment of aggregation centres will be a catalyst for rural development,” he noted. “By bridging the gap between smallholder farmers and competitive markets, we can stimulate rural economies and increase farmer incomes.”

The Minister also emphasized the importance of partnerships, particularly with countries like China, in helping Lesotho achieve its development targets. He pointed to the China-Africa Economic Trade Expo as a valuable platform for attracting investment, exchanging knowledge, and forming strategic alliances that can support Lesotho’s agricultural transformation.

Lesotho, with its fertile soil and untapped farming potential, is positioning agriculture at the centre of its economic development agenda. By embracing innovation and international cooperation, the government aims to make the sector more resilient, productive, and profitable.

As the Expo continues to foster dialogue between African nations and Chinese investors, Lesotho’s clear roadmap for agricultural advancement is drawing attention. With the right support and investment, the country is poised to turn its ambitions into a sustainable reality that benefits both rural communities and the national economy.
