Energy Minister Mohlomi Moleko Launches M18.4 Million Rural Electrification Project in ’Melikane

In a significant step toward improving access to electricity in rural Lesotho, Energy Minister Mohlomi Moleko on Wednesday launched an M18.4 million electrification project in ’Melikane. The initiative is set to connect 420 households across eight remote villages, marking a major milestone in the government’s efforts to bridge the energy access gap in underserved communities.

The project will be implemented over an 18-month period, with the official contract awarded to Amulet Group. This infrastructure development is expected to bring power to the villages of Ha Nyatso, Likileng, Dodomayo, Ha Khoathi, Ha Chale, Mahoeng, Thueleng, and Ha Khanya.

Speaking at the launch event, Minister Moleko highlighted the broader vision behind the investment. “Access to electricity is not just about lighting homes — it’s about empowering families, supporting education, and creating economic opportunities,” he said. “This project is a vital part of our commitment to inclusive development and equity in energy distribution.”

Each household connection is estimated to cost M43,000, reflecting the challenges and high costs associated with extending power lines to remote areas. However, government officials emphasize that the long-term social and economic benefits far outweigh the initial expenses.

The project is part of Lesotho’s broader strategy to increase rural electrification and support sustainable development. By bringing electricity to these eight villages, the government aims to stimulate local enterprise, improve access to information, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.

Amulet Group has pledged to work closely with local communities throughout the construction phase, ensuring minimal disruption and active community involvement. The company also confirmed that a number of local workers would be hired to support the project, further contributing to job creation in the region.

As the project gets underway, residents in the beneficiary villages have expressed optimism and gratitude. For many, this marks the first time their homes will be connected to the national grid — a development they believe will transform their lives for the better.

Minister Moleko concluded the launch ceremony by reaffirming the government’s commitment to rural electrification. “This is just one of many steps we are taking to ensure no village is left behind in our journey toward progress,” he said.
