WHO Calls for High-Quality Maternal and Newborn Care Ahead of World Health Day

The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the need for women and families worldwide to receive high-quality care that supports them physically and emotionally before, during, and after childbirth. This statement comes ahead of World Health Day, which will be celebrated on April 7.

In its announcement, WHO revealed that this year’s World Health Day will mark the beginning of a year-long campaign titled “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.” The campaign focuses on maternal and newborn health, urging governments and the global health community to intensify efforts to eliminate preventable maternal and newborn deaths. It also calls for increased attention to women’s long-term health and well-being.

WHO has highlighted that despite progress in maternal healthcare, many women and newborns still face life-threatening complications due to inadequate healthcare systems, lack of skilled birth attendants, and limited access to essential medical services. The organization stressed that improving maternal and newborn care is crucial for ensuring healthier societies and reducing global mortality rates.

As part of the campaign, WHO is calling on policymakers, healthcare providers, and communities to invest in comprehensive maternal healthcare, including access to skilled healthcare workers, safe delivery facilities, and postpartum support. The initiative aims to create awareness and drive action toward sustainable healthcare improvements for mothers and their babies.

World Health Day 2024 serves as a reminder that quality maternal care is fundamental to ensuring the survival and well-being of women and newborns worldwide. WHO’s campaign seeks to inspire collective action and policies that will help achieve better health outcomes for future generations.
