Minister Rapapa Hails Opening of Confucius Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology

Minister of Education and Training, Professor Ntoi Rapapa, has described the opening of the Confucius Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology as a significant milestone in international collaboration and academic advancement.

The Confucius Institute, established at the National University of Lesotho (NUL), is the result of a partnership between NUL, Jilin Agricultural University, and Tonghua Normal University. The institute, named after Confucius, a key figure in Chinese culture, serves as a bridge for educational exchanges and cultural mutual learning, fostering understanding and friendship among nations.

Speaking on Tuesday evening during a reception at the Chinese Embassy in Maseru, Professor Rapapa emphasized that the institute’s establishment was made possible through the support of the Chinese government. He highlighted that this partnership is a powerful step toward diversifying the university’s academic and research programs, reinforcing its commitment to agricultural development.

The minister noted that the collaboration is not only timely but also strategic, as it comes at a time when the Basotho nation, like many others, faces increasing climate-induced challenges. These challenges threaten agricultural productivity, food systems, and livelihoods. Through the institute, students and researchers will have access to knowledge and resources that can help mitigate these issues and enhance agricultural resilience.

Professor Rapapa expressed optimism that the institute will serve as a beacon of progress, equipping future generations with the expertise necessary to tackle agricultural and environmental challenges. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening educational ties with international partners to foster innovation and sustainable development.
