Lesotho and South Africa Sign Six MoUs at Binational Commission to Boost Bilateral Cooperation

At least six Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed between the governments of Lesotho and South Africa during the second session of the Binational Commission, currently underway in Maseru. These agreements signal a deepening of cooperation across several critical sectors, as both countries continue to strengthen diplomatic and developmental ties.

One of the notable MoUs includes the proposed construction of a two-way bridge along the Mohokare/Caledon River, a strategic move aimed at improving cross-border connectivity and infrastructure. This agreement was formally signed by Lesotho’s Minister of Natural Resources, Mr. Mohlomi Moleko, and South Africa’s Ms. Pemmy Castelina Pamela Majodina.

In the education sector, significant steps were taken to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange. The Minister of Education and Training for Lesotho, Professor Ntoi Rapapa, signed two MoUs — one with South African counterpart Dr. Nobuhle Pamela Nkabane, and another focusing on basic education, signed with Ms. Siviwe Gwarube. These agreements aim to bolster education systems, promote student exchange programs, and enhance curriculum development between the two nations.

The remaining MoUs, though not detailed in full at this stage, are expected to cover additional areas of mutual interest, reflecting a comprehensive effort to address shared challenges and opportunities.

The signing of these MoUs marks a milestone in the Binational Commission’s objectives to institutionalize collaboration and ensure tangible outcomes for both countries. As the session continues in Maseru, the atmosphere remains one of optimism and commitment toward a stronger, more interconnected future for Lesotho and South Africa.
