African Armyworm Eradicated in Several Villages, Confirms Agriculture Official

The District Crop Production Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Nutrition, Mr. Moeketsi Tohlang, has confirmed that the African Armyworm has been successfully eradicated from various villages in the district.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Tohlang provided an update on the efforts to combat the destructive pest, which was first detected in Ha-Mopooane in March. He noted that significant progress had been made through targeted control measures, including the strategic placement of butterfly traps in affected areas.

According to Mr. Tohlang, traps were set in Lefikeng, Ha-Mohalinyane, Liphiring Ha Mokhatla, Ha-Raselepe, and Mekaling to monitor and control the spread of the pest. The traps have been effective, with some capturing as many as 100 butterflies, while others have trapped around 20.

The eradication of the African Armyworm marks a critical step in protecting crops and ensuring food security in the district. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any resurgence of the pest and safeguard agricultural productivity.
