Senators Criticize Minister’s Response on Mokhotlong Hospital Sewerage Issue

Senators have expressed dissatisfaction over the response given to Question 57, posed by Senator Sehloho Monatsi to the Minister of Health during a parliamentary question-and-answer session on Wednesday. Lawmakers criticized the reply as vague and lacking in detail, calling for more thorough responses to pressing national issues.

The controversy arose when the Minister of Forestry and Environment, Mr. Letsema Adonts’i, speaking on behalf of the Health Minister, acknowledged that the government was aware of the poor state of the waste water and sewerage treatment infrastructure at Mokhotlong Hospital. He further stated that efforts would be made in collaboration with the Water and Sewerage Company (WASCO) to address the matter.

However, Senators found the response unconvincing, arguing that it failed to provide concrete solutions, timelines, or budgetary considerations. They emphasized that such critical infrastructure issues require comprehensive plans rather than broad assurances. As a result, they called for the matter to be deferred for further research, insisting that the question warranted a more detailed and substantive answer.

The dissatisfaction highlights growing concerns about the quality of ministerial responses in Parliament, with lawmakers urging the executive to provide well-researched and actionable answers to critical public service concerns. The issue remains pending as Senators push for a more concrete commitment to resolving Mokhotlong Hospital’s sewerage challenges.
