Hirundo Energy Unveils Plans for Two Wind Farms in Lesotho to Boost Renewable Energy

In a bold step towards enhancing renewable energy production in Lesotho, Hirundo Energy, a long-time partner of the National University of Lesotho’s (NUL) Energy Research Centre (ERC), has unveiled plans to develop two wind farms in the region. This initiative is expected to play a pivotal role in generating sustainable energy and meeting the country’s growing electricity demands.
The first of the wind farms, located on a mountain ridge to the east of Mohale’s Hoek, will feature 12 wind turbines, each boasting a capacity of 3 to 6 MW. The second farm, situated near Masite Nek (Ha ‘Majane), will consist of 8 turbines of similar capacity. Collectively, these installations are anticipated to produce approximately 225 GWh of electricity, contributing a remarkable 25 percent to the current electricity consumption in Lesotho.
The ambitious plans for the wind farms have reached such an advanced stage that Hirundo Energy formally inaugurated an office in Mohale’s Hoek on Friday, signaling their commitment to the project and the region.
The opening ceremony was attended by dignitaries and stakeholders, including Mr. Jacob Demeyer, Managing Director of Hirundo Energy, and Prof. Leboli Zak Thamae, Coordinator of the NUL ERC. During the ceremony, both leaders expressed their enthusiasm for the long-standing partnership between Hirundo Energy and the NUL ERC. Over the years, this collaboration has facilitated numerous projects, encompassing comprehensive technical and economic analyses vital for the successful implementation of the planned wind farms.
“The establishment of these wind farms is not just a milestone for Hirundo Energy but for the entire nation of Lesotho,” said Mr. Demeyer. “We are dedicated to harnessing the rich wind energy resources of this beautiful country to help meet its electricity needs sustainably.”
Prof. Thamae added, “We at the ERC are excited to welcome Hirundo Energy to Lesotho. The launch of the first wind farm will not only provide a renewable energy source but will also create job opportunities and foster economic growth in the region.”
As Lesotho looks to diversify its energy sources and improve energy security, this project could mark a transformative chapter in the nation’s energy landscape. With a commitment to sustainability and innovation, Hirundo Energy and the NUL ERC aim to position Lesotho as a leader in renewable energy within the Southern African region.
