Government Urged to Support Hailstorm-Affected Farmers with Seeds

The government should provide seeds to Basotho farmers whose crops were destroyed by last month’s hailstorm to help them restore their harvest in the next agricultural season. This was the message from the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Limpho Tau, during a food donation handover ceremony at Ha Ntsika Lekhalong in the Bobatsi Constituency on Monday.

Addressing the public, Mr. Tau emphasized the need to support both subsistence and commercial farmers who suffered losses due to the severe weather. He highlighted that assisting affected farmers would not only help them recover but also safeguard household food security.

Commending communities that had taken up crop farming, he noted that the crops seen in the fields were a promising step toward hunger alleviation. He urged more Basotho to engage in agriculture, emphasizing that self-sufficiency in food production is crucial for the country’s future.

“It is high time that Lesotho feeds her people by promoting increased agricultural production instead of relying on food donations from other countries,” he stated.

The call for support comes as part of broader efforts to strengthen Lesotho’s agricultural sector and build resilience against climate-related challenges.
