District Leaders Attend Workshop on National Spatial Development Framework

On Thursday, District Heads of Departments (HOD) and key stakeholders in land management convened for a one-day workshop on the National Spatial Development Framework (NSDF) at a local lodge in Upper Moyeni. The workshop also included Assistant Physical Planners and Council Secretaries from six councils in the district, focusing on the importance of their contributions to the district’s spatial development framework, which will inform the broader national framework.

Understanding the NSDF’s Role
The Commissioner on Lands, Ms. Mantai Seboko, addressed the participants, emphasizing the crucial role their effective participation plays in shaping the NSDF. She explained that the framework serves as a strategic plan to guide Lesotho’s land use, housing, and broader development initiatives.

“This framework is vital for ensuring that development in Lesotho is structured, sustainable, and inclusive,” said Ms. Seboko. She added that by aligning district plans with the NSDF, Basotho can benefit from improved infrastructure, organized land use, and better housing solutions.

A Collaborative Effort
The workshop provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss their roles in crafting a comprehensive spatial development strategy for the district. Participants explored ways to address land-related challenges while considering economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social equity.

Assistant Physical Planners and Council Secretaries shared insights from their respective councils, highlighting the unique needs and opportunities within their communities. Their input is expected to shape a district-level framework that aligns with national goals.

Future Implications
The NSDF aims to promote well-coordinated development that balances urban expansion with rural needs. By engaging local leaders and stakeholders, the framework seeks to address pressing issues such as unplanned settlements, land degradation, and limited access to resources.

Ms. Seboko concluded by encouraging participants to take ownership of the framework and ensure it reflects the aspirations of their communities. “The success of this initiative depends on your dedication and commitment,” she said.

As Lesotho moves forward with the NSDF, workshops like the one held in Upper Moyeni will remain instrumental in fostering collaboration and ensuring that the framework serves the needs of all Basotho.
