LMPS Pleads with Nation to Return Illegal Firearms
The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) is urging the public to voluntarily surrender illegal firearms, ammunition, and other unlawful weapons in an effort to enhance national safety and stability. This initiative comes as part of a broader strategy to reduce violence and criminal activity associated with illegal firearms in the country.
Inspector ‘Mareabetsoe Mofoka, the Public Relations Officer of the LMPS, emphasized that this voluntary handover program will not result in arrests, and individuals surrendering weapons can do so without disclosing their identities. This approach aims to encourage citizens to participate in the initiative without fear of legal repercussions, thereby fostering a cooperative environment for the surrender of illegal firearms.
“By encouraging the public to return these weapons, we can help eliminate the threat posed by illegal firearms,” Inspector Mofoka stated. She highlighted that illegal weapons often contribute to instability and undermine the safety and peace of the nation. The initiative is seen as a crucial step toward creating a more secure environment for all Basotho.
The LMPS has made it clear that while the voluntary surrender program offers a safe way for individuals to dispose of illegal weapons, those who choose not to comply will face legal consequences. This firm stance underscores the seriousness of the issue and the police’s commitment to upholding law and order in Lesotho.
As the campaign progresses, the LMPS hopes that the public will recognize the importance of contributing to the nation’s safety and will respond positively to this plea. By working together, the LMPS and the citizens of Lesotho can take significant strides towards a safer future, free from the threats posed by illegal firearms.
