NULIS hosts the Maseru District Science Fair

National University of Lesotho International School (NULIS) hosted a two-day Maseru District Science and Maths Fair that was organized by the Lesotho Science and Mathematics Teachers Association (LSMTA), from 28-29 April, 2022.

The colorful event saw an exhibition of Maths and Science projects (creations and innovations) created by pupils from both primary and secondary schools. The Fair started with welcome remarks by the NUL Vice Chancellor, the Chairperson of the LSMTA Maseru District Committee as well as a representative of the National Executive Committee of the LSMTA.

A brief pre-judging workshop was held to guide the judges. Students were also quizzed on their knowledge and problem-solving skills in English and Mathematics. The highlight of the event was the prize-giving ceremony for the winners on the last day.

Chairperson of the LSMTA Maseru District Committee, Mrs ‘Madamasina Matebesi, appreciated the organizers, sponsors, schools, teachers and students who took their time to make the projects and innovations. She indicated that as teachers and judges, they are also learning every time they go through the projects.  She encouraged all who participated to keep on improving their projects so that they come out the best in the end.

Before officially opening the event, NUL Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Fajana, highlighted the importance of science in our daily lives. He expressed his happiness in seeing so many young learners eager to advance the knowledge and understanding of science in our daily lives. He reassured the participating learners that they are all winners.

Participating learners came from 12 primary schools and 38 secondary schools (both public and private) in Maseru. Winners from this District Fair will proceed to the national Fair to be held later in the year.

Some of the objectives of the Fair are to motivate learners to love Science and Maths subjects as well as; to use the scientific methods they learnt in class to solve real life problems. The Fair is also aimed at eradicating the phobia/fear of Sciences among learners.
