Lesotho Ministry of Energy Unveils Five Plans to Boost Electrification and Achieve SDG7

The Ministry of Energy has outlined five strategic plans aimed at accelerating Lesotho’s electrification and achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7), which focuses on ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. The announcement was made by Minister of Energy, Mr. Mohlomi Moleko, during a session in the National Assembly on September 22, while debating the report of the Sessional Committee on Sustainable Development Goals Monitoring Committee. The report focused on site visits and public hearings regarding SDG7.
Minister Moleko highlighted that the Ministry’s approach addresses five key components: energy generation, transmission, distribution, legal reforms, and institutional reforms. These components are designed to create a robust energy sector capable of supporting Lesotho’s socio-economic development.
In terms of institutional reforms, Mr. Moleko explained that the Ministry is actively transforming the Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC). Steps already taken include appointing a new Board and Managing Director, reviewing tariffs, and implementing a turnaround strategy. The Ministry has also developed long-term and strategic plans to ensure LEC operates sustainably.
The generation plan focuses on expanding access to electricity through both conventional and renewable energy sources, while the transmission and distribution strategies aim to improve network efficiency and reach underserved areas. Legal reforms are targeted at updating energy regulations to align with international standards and attract investment in the sector.
The Ministry emphasized that these initiatives will not only increase electrification rates but also promote economic growth, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for citizens. By strengthening institutional frameworks, the Ministry aims to ensure that the energy sector is sustainable, financially viable, and capable of meeting growing demand.
Minister Moleko concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to achieving SDG7, stating that coordinated efforts between the Ministry, LEC, and other stakeholders are critical to realizing Lesotho’s energy goals. The five-pronged plan is expected to significantly advance national electrification, reduce energy poverty, and support the country’s broader development agenda.
