Beekeeping Project in Phamong Flourishes with Support from RSDA and Tache Foundation

A beekeeping project in Phamong, Shalane Mohale’s Hoek, is making significant strides after its first successful honey harvest, as reported by the Rural Self-Help Development Association (RSDA) Managing Director. The project, which is supported by the RSDA and the Tache Foundation, is set to improve the livelihoods of the local community and promote sustainable development in rural Lesotho.

Mrs. ‘Mampho Thulo, the Managing Director of RSDA, spoke to the Agency, highlighting the success of the initiative. She explained that the Tache Foundation had provided substantial financial support to the project, contributing thousands of Maloti to purchase essential beekeeping equipment. This includes refractometers, brooding boxes, and electric honey extractors — all vital tools for ensuring high-quality honey production.

The refractometer, for instance, plays a crucial role in measuring the water content in honey, ensuring that the final product meets the required quality standards. Mrs. Thulo emphasized that the equipment is an essential investment in the project’s long-term success. “The intention is to bring farmers together for the growth and development of the project,” she said.

RSDA’s vision is to improve the living conditions of rural Basotho, particularly in eradicating extreme hunger and promoting economic self-sufficiency. This beekeeping initiative is part of a broader effort to uplift the community by introducing sustainable agricultural practices that can generate income and improve food security.

The community’s participation in the project is expected to foster collaboration among local farmers, strengthening their collective ability to thrive and create a better future for the region. With the ongoing support of RSDA and the Tache Foundation, the beekeeping project in Phamong is positioned to make a lasting impact on the area’s rural development.
