Celebrating 33 Years of the Kananelo Centre for the Deaf

On Friday, the Kananelo Centre for the Deaf (KCD) in Ha-Buasono, Berea, marked a significant milestone, celebrating 33 years since its establishment in 1991. Founded by Sister Babtistina Seeng Matsung, the school has grown to accommodate 58 children from Grade R to Grade Seven, providing essential education and support to the deaf community.

Named after a French benefactor who contributed to its establishment, the school’s Sesotho name, “Kananelo,” translates to “support” or “assistance,” reflecting its mission to uplift and empower children with hearing impairments. The institution currently employs five teachers funded through grants and three additional staff members, ensuring a comprehensive learning environment for its students.

In an interview, KCD Principal Sister Marriam Mosebo expressed her pride in the school’s achievements over the past three decades. “This milestone marks a lifetime achievement to be celebrated,” she stated. “We are grateful to God for guiding us through the challenges and successes we have encountered along the way.”

The journey of KCD has not been without its hurdles. Like many institutions dedicated to specialized education, the school has faced challenges related to funding, resources, and accessibility. However, the dedication of its staff and the resilience of its students have allowed the school to thrive and continue fulfilling its mission.

Over the years, KCD has made significant strides in enhancing the quality of education for its students, fostering an inclusive environment where children can learn, grow, and develop their unique skills. The school’s success stories are a testament to the importance of community support and advocacy for the rights of individuals with disabilities.

As KCD celebrates this landmark anniversary, it reflects not only on its past successes but also on its commitment to future growth and development. The school remains focused on creating more opportunities for its students, ensuring they have the tools and resources needed to succeed both academically and socially.

The celebration of 33 years at KCD serves as a reminder of the impact that dedicated educators and community support can have on the lives of children with hearing impairments. As they look to the future, KCD is determined to continue its vital work, advocating for the rights and inclusion of deaf individuals in society.
