Lesotho Launches First Annual Tourism Pitso To Drive Sustainable Growth And Investment

The Government of Lesotho has launched the country’s first Annual Tourism Pitso, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss the future of the tourism sector and its contribution to the national economy. The two-day gathering is taking place from September 16 to 17, 2026, at the Manthabiseng Convention Centre in Maseru. It is being hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture in collaboration with the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation. Government representatives, tourism operators, private-sector businesses, communities, development partners and other stakeholders are participating in discussions focused on strengthening the sector. The gathering provides a platform to examine existing challenges while identifying practical opportunities for investment, product development and sustainable tourism growth.
Officially opening the Tourism Pitso, Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture Honourable Mputi Stephen Mputi said the gathering should help identify ways of making tourism a stronger driver of sustainable growth for Basotho. He called on Basotho to look at the country’s tourism assets not only as attractions but also as opportunities for developing marketable products and investment projects. This approach requires communities and businesses to understand how natural and cultural resources can be developed responsibly while creating economic opportunities. It also places greater emphasis on turning tourism potential into products that can attract visitors and investors. The Minister’s message puts investment and local participation at the centre of discussions about the sector’s future.
Lesotho has a range of natural and cultural assets that can support tourism activities, but these assets need to be developed into experiences and products that visitors can access and understand. Minister Mputi said the Tourism Pitso would provide an opportunity to examine the challenges that may be preventing the sector from reaching its potential. Discussions will include investment, marketing and tourism product development, allowing stakeholders to share knowledge and experiences. Tourism operators can use these engagements to identify areas where their businesses and products may need improvement. Strengthening the quality and attractiveness of tourism products can also make them more appealing to investors looking for viable opportunities.
Investment is expected to remain a central theme throughout the two-day gathering. The Minister urged stakeholders to develop investment-ready tourism projects that can attract funding and contribute to the growth of the sector. Investment-ready projects require clear plans, viable business models and an understanding of the market they intend to serve. They also need to consider infrastructure, accessibility, sustainability and the needs of local communities. Developing projects with these factors in mind can make it easier for potential investors to assess opportunities and determine where their resources could contribute to tourism development.
Marketing is another important area being addressed during the Tourism Pitso because tourism products need strong visibility to attract visitors. The way Lesotho presents itself as a destination can influence how potential tourists understand the country’s attractions and experiences. Digital platforms have created additional opportunities for destinations and tourism businesses to reach audiences beyond their immediate markets. The gathering will therefore examine how marketing strategies can be strengthened while making better use of available technologies. Effective marketing can help connect tourism products with visitors while also creating greater awareness of investment opportunities within the sector.
Minister Mputi also highlighted the potential role of the digital agenda and artificial intelligence in transforming tourism in Lesotho. Technology can provide new ways for the country to showcase its attractions, promote tourism products and communicate with potential visitors. Artificial intelligence can also support areas such as digital marketing, information services and the development of tourism content. However, the Minister stressed that technology should complement Lesotho’s natural heritage rather than replace the value of its physical and cultural attractions. The challenge will be to use digital tools in ways that strengthen the visitor experience while preserving the identity and character of the destination.
Sustainability is also a key consideration as Lesotho looks to expand its tourism industry. Tourism development can create employment, support local businesses and generate income for communities, but growth needs to be managed responsibly. Natural landscapes, cultural sites and community resources need to be protected so that they remain valuable for future generations. Sustainable tourism can help balance economic opportunities with responsible management of the country’s environmental and cultural assets. Discussions at the Tourism Pitso will provide stakeholders with an opportunity to consider how development can take place without undermining the resources that attract visitors to Lesotho.
The Minister also stressed the importance of ensuring that tourism growth is inclusive and benefits Basotho and communities. Local communities can participate in tourism through accommodation, guiding, cultural experiences, crafts, food services, transport and other activities. Creating opportunities for local businesses can help ensure that money generated through tourism circulates within communities. It can also encourage communities to participate in protecting and promoting the attractions that support tourism activity. An inclusive approach requires stakeholders to consider how tourism investment can create meaningful economic opportunities rather than focusing only on visitor numbers.
Partnerships between government, businesses, communities and development partners will be important to achieving the goals discussed at the Tourism Pitso. Government has a role in creating policies and an enabling environment, while private-sector businesses can provide investment, services and innovation. Communities contribute local knowledge and can play a direct role in tourism activities and resource protection. Development partners can support skills development, infrastructure and other initiatives that strengthen the sector. Bringing these groups together can improve communication and create opportunities for coordinated action.
The two-day programme will include discussions, networking, exhibitions and dialogue around several areas affecting the future of Lesotho’s tourism industry. Participants will examine investment opportunities, sustainable tourism, destination marketing, digital transformation and tourism product development. They will also discuss stakeholder collaboration and the creation of an enabling environment that can support tourism growth. These conversations can help identify practical actions that businesses and institutions can take after the event. The exhibitions and networking sessions will also give participants opportunities to showcase products and build relationships that could support future partnerships.
The launch of Lesotho’s first Annual Tourism Pitso provides a platform for stakeholders to examine how the country’s tourism potential can be converted into sustainable economic opportunities. The focus on investment, product development, digital transformation and community participation reflects the need for a coordinated approach to tourism growth. Turning tourism assets into competitive products will require continued collaboration between government, businesses, communities and other partners. At the same time, sustainable development will remain important to protecting the natural and cultural resources that make Lesotho attractive to visitors. As the Tourism Pitso continues through September 17, 2026, the discussions and partnerships developed during the gathering can help shape practical efforts to strengthen Lesotho’s tourism sector and create wider opportunities for Basotho.
