Opening of Livestock Dip Tank in Quthing District Highlights Progress and Ongoing Agricultural Challenges

In the Quthing District of Lesotho, agricultural development took a significant step forward on 22 May 2026 with the opening of a new livestock dip tank at Liphakoe under the Tele Agricultural Center. The initiative was led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition in collaboration with farmers from Likhuts’oane. The project aims to improve livestock health services and strengthen animal production systems in rural farming communities. The event marked an important milestone for farmers who have worked for several years to bring the project to completion. It also reflects ongoing efforts to improve agricultural infrastructure across Quthing District through community driven development.

The idea of constructing the dip tank began in 2022 when farmers and agricultural officers met to address challenges affecting livestock care and disease control. Farmers explained that they often struggled to access consistent veterinary services, especially in remote areas where travel distances are long and costly. After consultations and official approval processes, the group selected the site at Liphakoe within the Liphakoe area. Construction began after farmers raised funds through collective contributions, showing strong commitment to improving livestock health. The Tele Agricultural Center coordinated the planning and ensured the project followed required agricultural procedures and safety standards.

Mr. Mojela Letsie, speaking on behalf of the farmers, explained that the main goal of the project was to establish a functional dip tank that would serve livestock owners in the area. He highlighted that the project required patience, coordination and shared responsibility among community members. Although progress has been made, he noted that the work is still not fully complete. Some sections of the dip tank still require additional funding and materials to reach full operational status. He called for further support so that the remaining work can be completed and farmers can fully benefit from the facility.

During the opening, District Veterinary Officer Dr. Makhanyane Mohapi commended the farmers for their effort and determination in completing most of the project. He encouraged continued cooperation between farmers and agricultural supervisors to ensure proper use and maintenance of the dip tank. He also emphasized the importance of correct livestock treatment practices, advising farmers not to mix different medicines when treating animals. He explained that combining treatments can reduce effectiveness and may cause harmful interactions that fail to eliminate parasites such as lice in livestock herds. His guidance focused on improving animal health outcomes through proper veterinary practices and responsible medicine use.

The establishment of the dip tank in Liphakoe demonstrates both progress and ongoing challenges in rural agricultural development in Lesotho. The project shows the power of community driven initiatives supported by government institutions and agricultural officers working together. At the same time, it highlights the need for continued funding and technical support to complete unfinished sections and ensure long term sustainability. Farmers remain central to improving livestock health and strengthening rural economies through active participation and cooperation. With continued support, the dip tank is expected to improve disease control, reduce livestock losses and contribute to stronger food security in Quthing District.
