Lesotho and China Strengthen Diplomatic and Development Ties During State Visit

On January 10, 2026, The Right Honourable Prime Minister of Lesotho, Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane, officially welcomed H.E. Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, and his delegation at State House in Maseru. The visit marked a significant step in deepening diplomatic relations and expanding strategic cooperation between the Kingdom of Lesotho and China.

Prime Minister Matekane highlighted that the visit reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to a long-standing strategic partnership. He acknowledged the contributions of Chinese enterprises in delivering tangible development results in Lesotho and emphasized that future collaboration should focus on skills development and job creation for Basotho citizens.

Minister Wang Yi arrived earlier at Moshoeshoe I International Airport, where he was received by Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho, Mr. Yang Xiaokun, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Thabang Lekhela, and senior government officials. During his visit, Minister Wang Yi expressed gratitude for the warm reception and congratulated Lesotho ahead of its 60th independence anniversary. He praised the Government’s commitment to national development and economic transformation, noting that his visit was part of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), aimed at supporting African countries in priority development projects.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane, held bilateral talks with Minister Wang Yi. Following the discussions, he told the media that Lesotho seeks to strengthen economic cooperation with China, enhance agricultural production, and collaborate on aviation projects, including the refurbishment of Moshoeshoe I International Airport. Plans are also being explored for Basotho teachers and youth to gain work experience in China.

The visit underscores the strong and friendly relations between Lesotho and China, grounded in mutual political trust and collaboration in infrastructure development, health, education, and international affairs. Both countries committed to advancing joint initiatives that support sustainable development and economic growth in Lesotho.
