Dr. Mpopo Ts’oele Appointed Principal Secretary of Lesotho Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs and Police

Dr. Mpopo Ts’oele has been appointed as the new Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs and Police. His appointment marks a renewed focus on accountability and the improvement of public service delivery across Lesotho. At the official handover event, Dr. Ts’oele emphasized that the ministry serves as the face of government and must ensure that services are delivered efficiently and with dignity.

Dr. Ts’oele highlighted commitments made by the Prime Minister, including improving road infrastructure, stabilizing the police service, and ensuring easier access to essential documents such as passports and national identity cards. He noted that under the current administration, citizens would no longer face long waits or sleep at government offices while accessing these services.

Traditional leadership is also a priority under Dr. Ts’oele’s mandate. He confirmed that chieftainship offices will be strengthened and capacitated to enhance service delivery at the community level. “Our responsibility now is to translate those promises into tangible results,” he said, underlining that the civil service exists to fulfil political commitments.

The Principal Secretary expressed his dedication to implementing political directives and warned that accountability would become a key feature of the ministry’s operations. Management will take decisive action whenever laws or regulations are breached, he added.

District Administrator for Thaba-Tseka, Mr. Tlali Mphafi, welcomed the announcement and stressed that many of the country’s challenges stem from a lack of accountability. He called on public servants to take responsibility for their daily duties, noting that government effectiveness directly depends on performance at the workplace. Mr. Mphafi emphasized that strengthened accountability would improve governance and service delivery nationwide.

Dr. Mpopo Ts’oele succeeds Dr. Mamphaka Mabesa, who previously held the position. With his appointment, the ministry signals a clear shift toward greater transparency, responsibility, and efficient public service, reflecting the government’s broader vision for improved service delivery and community support.
