There were smiles, applause and emotional tributes at the Kick4Life Centre this week as family members, educators, partners and supporters gathered to celebrate two exceptional young footballers whose dedication has earned them life-changing international scholarships. During a press conference held on July 9, Kick4Life officially announced that Scholar-Football Academy standouts Mariam Monnapula and Thuso Khoarane will continue their academic and sporting journeys abroad. The celebration marked another significant achievement for the organisation, which has built a strong reputation for using football as a platform for education, leadership and personal development. The scholarships highlight how talent, discipline and hard work can create opportunities that extend far beyond the football pitch. They also reinforce Kick4Life’s commitment to empowering young Basotho through programmes that combine sport with academic excellence and community service.
The event showcased the remarkable impact of the Scholar-Football Academy, a programme that integrates football development with quality education, leadership training and volunteer service. Since its establishment, the academy has focused on developing well-rounded young people who excel not only in sport but also in academics and social responsibility. Rather than concentrating solely on athletic performance, the programme encourages participants to become confident leaders who can positively influence their communities. This holistic approach has enabled many talented student-athletes to access educational opportunities both within Lesotho and internationally. The latest scholarships awarded to Mariam Monnapula and Thuso Khoarane serve as powerful examples of the academy’s long-term success.
Sixteen-year-old Mariam Monnapula has secured a scholarship to attend the prestigious African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa. She will begin the academy’s highly respected two-year Leadership Programme on August 22, joining a diverse group of young leaders from across the African continent. The residential pre-university programme is designed to prepare future African leaders through rigorous academic studies, entrepreneurship, leadership development and African studies while opening pathways to some of the world’s leading universities. The opportunity represents a major milestone in Mariam’s educational journey and reflects years of commitment to both academic achievement and personal growth. Her selection demonstrates the calibre of students being developed through Kick4Life’s Scholar-Football Academy.
Mariam has established herself as an outstanding role model both on and off the football field. As a player for the Kick4Life Junior Girls team, she has consistently demonstrated commitment, teamwork and determination in her sporting career. Beyond football, she has volunteered as a life skills coach while also tutoring fellow students in Mathematics and Chemistry, showing her passion for education and community service. Since joining Kick4Life through its Soccer Schools programme in 2022, she has continued to develop as both a student and a leader. She has also represented Lesotho at regional leadership forums, successfully balancing sporting excellence with impressive academic performance.
Speaking during the celebration, Mariam reflected on how Kick4Life had transformed her confidence and helped shape her future. She explained that the organisation encouraged her to challenge herself and step outside her comfort zone in ways she had never imagined. According to Mariam, the person she was when she joined the programme in 2022 would never have been able to confidently stand before an audience and deliver a speech. She credited Kick4Life with playing an instrumental role in her academic success and personal development while preparing her to become a future leader for Africa. Her remarks inspired many attendees as she expressed her determination to make the most of the opportunity and continue serving others through leadership.
The celebrations also honoured twenty-year-old Thuso Khoarane, who has earned a four-year scholarship to study for a Bachelor of Information Technology Sciences degree, majoring in Cybersecurity, at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky, United States. In addition to pursuing his university studies, Khoarane will represent the institution’s football programme when he begins his new chapter on August 1. His achievement reflects years of dedication both in the classroom and on the football field. The scholarship provides him with an opportunity to combine higher education with competitive sport while preparing for a career in one of the world’s fastest-growing technology sectors. His success demonstrates how student-athletes can pursue excellence across multiple disciplines.
Khoarane’s journey through Kick4Life highlights the effectiveness of the organisation’s long-term player development model. After joining the programme in 2018, he progressed steadily from the Soccer School to becoming captain of Kick4Life Juventude, leading the team to the Lesotho A-Division League title. Away from football, he completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma while gaining valuable workplace experience as an IT Administration Assistant trainee through the Fit4Work and Play programme. He also volunteered as a life skills coach, giving back to younger participants and helping them develop valuable personal and social skills. His achievements reflect the balanced approach that Kick4Life promotes by encouraging participants to excel academically, professionally and athletically.
During an emotional speech, Khoarane dedicated his success to everyone who had supported his journey. He expressed deep gratitude to the entire Kick4Life family, saying the organisation had changed his life in ways that words could not fully describe. He explained that without Kick4Life, his future would likely have been very different and credited the organisation for creating opportunities that allowed him to grow into the person he is today. Describing Kick4Life as the giant on whose shoulders he stood, Khoarane acknowledged that his accomplishments were made possible through the guidance, mentorship and support he received over the years. His heartfelt tribute reflected the strong relationships and lasting impact that the organisation continues to have on the lives of young people.
Kick4Life Academics Coordinator Likhapha Khemi praised both scholarship recipients and emphasized that their achievements reflect years of commitment to academic excellence, leadership and community service. Khemi explained that the organisation remains dedicated to ensuring participants receive support not only in education and sport but also in developing the values and practical skills needed to navigate life’s challenges. The coordinator encouraged Mariam and Khoarane to remember that they will represent their families, Kick4Life and Lesotho as they begin their studies abroad. Khemi also expressed confidence that their success would inspire other young people to believe that determination, discipline and hard work can create extraordinary opportunities. Their achievements stand as proof that investing in education and character development produces lasting results.
Since 2016, Kick4Life’s Scholar-Football Academy has continued creating international education pathways for talented student-athletes by combining football, academic achievement and personal development into one comprehensive programme. The international scholarships awarded to Mariam Monnapula and Thuso Khoarane demonstrate the success of this model and the life-changing opportunities it can create for young people in Lesotho. Their journeys illustrate how dedication, resilience and a willingness to embrace new challenges can open doors to world-class education and promising careers. As they prepare to begin new chapters in South Africa and the United States, they carry with them the hopes of their families, mentors and communities. Their success is not only a personal achievement but also an inspiring reminder that sport, education and strong leadership can transform lives and build a brighter future for Lesotho’s next generation.
