Lesotho Takes Its Place at the 2026 World Governments Summit in Dubai

Lesotho has secured a seat at one of the world’s most influential governance platforms. The Mountain Kingdom is participating in the 2026 World Governments Summit currently underway in Dubai. The representation reflects Lesotho’s growing engagement in global policy discussions, especially on technology, governance and international cooperation. The summit brings together leaders shaping how governments respond to rapid global change. For Lesotho, this moment signals intent, visibility and strategic positioning on the global stage.

According to the office of the Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, the country is represented by Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane. He is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Lejone Mpotjoane. The delegation also includes the Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation Nthati Moorosi, along with other senior government officials. Their presence places Lesotho directly in dialogue with global decision makers.

The World Governments Summit focuses on shaping shared visions and practical strategies to strengthen governance systems. Panel discussions and closed sessions explore solutions to global challenges such as digital transformation, economic resilience and international cooperation. The summit is designed to help governments translate ideas into policy action and measurable outcomes.

On the opening day, Minister Moorosi presented Lesotho’s position during the Ministerial Roundtable on Artificial Intelligence for Bridging the Digital Divide. She stated that the key question for Lesotho is no longer whether artificial intelligence will change society. The focus is now on how government can ensure AI benefits all citizens. She stressed inclusion across the country, from the highlands of Qacha’s Nek to the urban centres of Maseru.

Minister Moorosi emphasised that digital infrastructure is essential for national development. She noted that it is not a luxury. It is a gateway to the global economy. Without reliable connectivity and digital systems, countries risk exclusion from innovation, trade and efficient public services.

She also highlighted a major policy milestone. The government approved the National Artificial Intelligence Policy in the second half of last year. This decision marked a critical step toward structured and responsible adoption of AI technologies. The policy provides direction for how AI should be developed, regulated and applied in Lesotho.

According to the Minister, the policy promotes ethical development and responsible use of AI across sectors. It aims to improve quality of life in areas such as health, education and service delivery. It also establishes a governance framework to manage risks and guide implementation at national level.

Summit sessions are designed to assess the current global and regional landscape. They focus on generating insights that help governments ensure prosperity in a rapidly changing world. The event has brought together thousands of participants, including Heads of State and Government, senior ministers and policy experts.

Prime Minister Matekane is expected to deliver a speech on Wednesday. His address is anticipated to outline Lesotho’s development priorities and governance outlook. The summit has also featured leading global thinkers, reinforcing its role as a platform for future focused policy dialogue.

Information released by the Dubai Government highlights the scale of this year’s summit. Mohammad Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the World Governments Summit Organisation, noted record participation by global leaders. He stated that this reflects the summit’s growing significance as a platform for shaping the future of governance and promoting preparedness in line with Dubai’s leadership vision.

Lesotho’s participation carries strategic importance. It places the country within global conversations that influence technology policy and governance standards. It also signals commitment to inclusive growth and responsible innovation. As discussions continue in Dubai, Lesotho’s contribution reflects a clear focus on equity, policy direction and long term national progress.
