Lesotho Launches Tourism and Hospitality Thematic Working Group

The Government of Lesotho has convened the inaugural meeting of the Tourism and Hospitality Thematic Working Group at Mojalefa Lephole Victory Hall, marking a strategic step in strengthening the country’s tourism sector. This initiative is led by the Ministry of Tourism, Sports, Arts, and Culture in partnership with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Business Development, the Competitiveness and Financial Inclusion Project (CAFI), and the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation. The working group has been established under the Public-Private Dialogue framework to create a structured platform for policy engagement, sector coordination, and implementation of priority reforms. It aims to bring together government officials, private sector representatives, and industry stakeholders to advance tourism competitiveness and sustainable growth. This collaboration reflects Lesotho’s commitment to unlocking economic opportunities through a coordinated and strategic approach to tourism development.

The TWG will focus on identifying challenges and opportunities within the tourism and hospitality sector, providing evidence-based recommendations to guide policy decisions. Stakeholders will discuss key interventions needed to strengthen infrastructure, enhance service delivery, and attract investment. The group will also explore strategies to improve market access for local tourism operators and promote high-value tourism experiences that showcase Lesotho’s unique cultural and natural assets. By aligning government priorities with private sector insights, the TWG seeks to create a dynamic ecosystem that encourages innovation and competitiveness. The initiative underscores the importance of collaboration between public and private actors in shaping a resilient and vibrant tourism sector.

Beyond policy dialogue, the TWG will drive practical implementation of priority reforms and investment actions. Members will work to establish clear action plans for regulatory improvements, skills development, and sector promotion. The platform will also support monitoring and evaluation of initiatives to ensure accountability and measure progress toward strategic goals. By fostering a culture of coordination and information sharing, the TWG is expected to enhance decision-making and optimize resource allocation across the tourism ecosystem. This structured approach will help Lesotho respond effectively to evolving market demands while maintaining sustainable practices.

The inaugural meeting provides a foundation for long-term collaboration between stakeholders and positions Lesotho as a proactive player in regional and global tourism. Discussions will focus on immediate priorities, such as improving visitor experience, supporting local entrepreneurs, and leveraging Lesotho’s cultural heritage and natural landscapes for economic gain. By addressing structural and operational challenges, the TWG aims to create an enabling environment for growth and investment. The platform will also facilitate partnerships with development organizations and private investors to drive innovation and capacity building. Overall, the TWG represents a strategic mechanism to enhance Lesotho’s tourism sector competitiveness and generate sustainable economic impact.

The establishment of the Tourism and Hospitality Thematic Working Group signals Lesotho’s commitment to a coordinated, strategic, and sustainable approach to sector development. By combining government leadership with private sector expertise, the TWG will provide actionable solutions that strengthen competitiveness, improve service delivery, and attract investment. It also offers a forum for continuous dialogue, ensuring that policies remain responsive to emerging trends and sector needs. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to job creation, economic diversification, and improved livelihoods for communities. Through this platform, Lesotho is poised to build a resilient, innovative, and globally competitive tourism and hospitality industry.
