Lesotho Concludes Term as Chair of African Group at the United Nations

The Kingdom of Lesotho successfully concluded its term as Chair of the African Group at the United Nations, completing a month of active engagement, collaboration, and strong representation of Africa’s collective interests. The period highlighted Lesotho’s commitment to promoting unity among African states and ensuring the continent’s priorities were visible on the global stage. Under its leadership, the African Group coordinated positions, advocated on key issues, and reinforced Africa’s shared voice in international decision-making.

Led by H.E. Ambassador Matete ‘Nena, Lesotho oversaw regular meetings of the African Group, facilitating discussions that shaped common positions on pressing global matters. As Chair, Lesotho delivered statements at several major UN sessions, including discussions on the United Nations Secretary-General and President of the General Assembly priorities for 2026, the UN80 Initiative, Security Council reform, and the ECOSOC@80 commemoration. These engagements demonstrated Lesotho’s active role in ensuring African perspectives were consistently presented and respected.

The Chairmanship also fostered meaningful exchanges with senior UN officials and African institutions. Key topics included peace and security, development through UNDP initiatives, trade advancement via AfCFTA, digital transformation supported by the African Telecommunications Union, and enhanced AU–UN cooperation. These interactions strengthened Africa’s coordination at the UN and helped maintain the continent’s central role in shaping policies and decisions affecting its member states.

As Lesotho handed over the Chairmanship to Liberia, it did so with a record of progress, continuity, and strengthened unity within the African Group. The successful tenure underscored Lesotho’s diplomatic leadership and commitment to multilateralism. The month of active engagement positioned Africa as a cohesive and influential participant in global governance, setting a foundation for ongoing collaboration among its member states.

This milestone reinforces Lesotho’s reputation as a proactive and capable leader in African diplomacy, demonstrating how small nations can play a pivotal role in shaping international agendas.
