Delays in Study Permits Disrupt Lesotho Students’ Registration in South Africa

On January 27, 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Hon. Lejone Mpotjoane, confirmed that delays in study permit processing have disrupted the registration of Lesotho students in South Africa. The issue has affected both schools and universities across the country. Many Basotho students arrived ready to study but could not complete registration on time. The situation has caused stress for students and families who depend on cross border education opportunities. Education access remains a priority for the Government of Lesotho.

The delays were caused by technical problems at the South African High Commission. These problems led to the late issuance of study permits for Basotho students. As a result, several institutions could not process registrations within their official deadlines. Some students risked losing their academic year due to factors beyond their control. Authorities acknowledged that the issue was administrative and not linked to student compliance.

To address the problem, Lesotho and South Africa agreed on immediate intervention measures. The South African High Commission committed to issuing formal letters to learning institutions. These letters request that Basotho students not be excluded due to permit delays. Several institutions have already received these letters. The aim is to protect students from unfair exclusion while the backlog is cleared.

The Government of Lesotho also engaged the South African Ministry of Home Affairs to speed up resolution. The ministry has assured both governments that the matter will be handled urgently. Learning institutions have been asked to extend registration deadlines. Students may now register using proof of study permit application receipts. This approach ensures that no Mosotho student is denied education because of administrative delays.
