Lesotho Achieves Milestone in HIV Fight as King Letsie III Marks World AIDS Day

On December 1, 2025, World AIDS Day, His Majesty King Letsie III commended Lesotho’s progress in combating HIV and AIDS. The country has exceeded the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets, achieving 97% of people living with HIV knowing their status, 97% of those diagnosed receiving treatment, and 99% of those on treatment achieving viral suppression.

King Letsie highlighted the impact of these achievements, noting the importance of testing, treatment, and community support. “While challenges remain, our unity, innovation, and dedication to marginalized communities will continue to save lives,” he said.

The King also announced the upcoming introduction of Lenacapavir, a long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) expected to become available next year. Lenacapavir offers stronger and longer-lasting protection against HIV, marking a significant step forward in prevention strategies.

Lesotho’s success demonstrates the effectiveness of sustained public health campaigns, community engagement, and innovative medical approaches. The country’s achievements provide a model for other nations striving to control HIV and AIDS, highlighting the importance of access to testing, treatment, and preventive tools.

With Lenacapavir on the horizon, Lesotho aims to strengthen its prevention efforts further, particularly among high-risk and marginalized populations. Continued collaboration between government, health institutions, and communities will be essential to maintaining these gains and moving closer to ending the HIV epidemic.

King Letsie’s message on World AIDS Day emphasized hope, resilience, and commitment, reaffirming Lesotho’s leadership role in global HIV and AIDS response efforts.
