UNDP and Lesotho Post Bank Partner to Empower Women and Youth Entrepreneurs

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Lesotho Post Bank have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to empower women and youth to start and grow businesses. The partnership aims to reduce unemployment and build inclusive economic growth in Lesotho.

During the signing ceremony, UNDP Resident Representative Dr. Olweya Jacqueline said the collaboration reflects their shared commitment to empowering women and youth. She explained that while many succeed in small-scale enterprises, few grow into sustainable businesses. Dr. Jacqueline said the partnership will bridge that gap by providing access to finance, knowledge, and mentorship.

The MoU targets several strategic areas. It will enhance access to finance for women and youth-led micro, small, and medium enterprises. It also aims to promote innovative entrepreneurship and expand access to both domestic and regional markets. Business training, mentorship, and development support will form part of the initiative. The two institutions will also facilitate learning exchanges to strengthen capacity and share expertise.

Lesotho Post Bank Managing Director Mr. Mokhachane Mopeli said access to finance has long been a barrier for young people and women entrepreneurs. He added that this agreement would help them become capable business owners. Mopeli said it was rewarding to be part of a project that addresses real challenges facing Basotho and pledged the bank’s full commitment to ensuring the success of the initiative.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Social Development, Mrs. Mahlapane Makakole Boliba, welcomed the partnership. She said it aligns with national efforts to tackle unemployment and promote women’s participation in the economy. She noted that while many women operate small businesses, few advance to higher levels of enterprise. The partnership seeks to address these barriers by creating enabling conditions for sustainable growth.

The UNDP and Lesotho Post Bank partnership is expected to strengthen Lesotho’s entrepreneurship landscape. It will provide the tools, training, and capital needed to help women and youth scale their ventures, create jobs, and contribute to a more inclusive and resilient economy.
