Lesotho and EU Forge Stronger Ties in Textiles and Apparel Sector

Lesotho is taking bold steps to strengthen its textiles and apparel sector, with the European Union (EU) and German Government supporting initiatives that aim to integrate local businesses into global value chains. This partnership seeks to boost innovation, trade, and job creation, while showcasing the country’s creative and cultural potential.

The momentum was on full display at the PELE (Pioneering Excellence in Lesotho Expression) High-Level Fashion Show in Maseru. Designers unveiled daring collections, highlighting textile innovation and modern interpretations of Basotho culture. The event celebrated creativity, craftsmanship, and trade, giving local designers a platform to reach both domestic and international markets.

The fashion show coincided with the launch of Lesotho’s new textiles business hub, a state-of-the-art facility designed to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the sector. The hub features over 230 sewing machines and modern production spaces, providing local entrepreneurs with access to high-quality manufacturing capabilities.

Minister of Trade Mokhethi Shelile officially opened the hub, emphasizing its role in strengthening the country’s textile industry. EU Ambassador Mette Sunnergren underlined the EU’s commitment to transparent and impactful trade initiatives. She noted the importance of maintaining the facilities and highlighted the hub’s potential to generate employment and improve access to production resources for MSMEs.

These initiatives are part of the RVCL+ Project, a collaborative effort between the EU, the German Government, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Business Development, and Investlndc. By linking Lesotho’s creative talent with advanced production infrastructure, the project aims to position the country as a competitive player in regional and global textile markets.

Through strategic partnerships and modern facilities, Lesotho is enhancing its textile and apparel sector, promoting entrepreneurship, and creating sustainable jobs. The PELE fashion show and the new business hub mark a significant step toward a more vibrant and globally integrated industry, reflecting the country’s commitment to growth, innovation, and cultural expression.
