Lesotho Advances One Health Strategy with National Bridging Workshop

Lesotho recently hosted a high-impact three-day National Bridging Workshop aimed at unifying human, animal, and environmental health efforts. The event was led by the Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Food Security, and Environment, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). The workshop marked a significant milestone in the country’s One Health strategy.
Deputy Principal Secretary Matsoanelo Monyobi emphasized the need to dismantle sectoral silos to build effective health systems. He called for stronger collaboration across human, animal, and environmental health sectors to prevent and respond to diseases that can jump from animals to humans.
WHO’s Dr. Sirak Hailu highlighted the increasing risk of zoonotic diseases, referencing Ebola and pandemic influenza as examples of urgent global threats. He stressed that most emerging infectious diseases originate in animals, making integrated health approaches essential to national and global security.
FAO’s Mohlophehi Maope described the One Health approach as “a necessity, not a choice.” He praised the workshop for creating a joint roadmap that guides cross-sector action and strengthens surveillance, prevention, and response strategies in Lesotho.
The workshop brought together experts, policymakers, and practitioners to share knowledge, identify gaps, and design coordinated interventions. Participants developed actionable plans to monitor, prevent, and control zoonotic and environmental health risks while promoting collaboration across ministries and agencies.
This initiative reflects Lesotho’s commitment to proactive health security and sustainable disease management. By implementing the One Health approach, the country aims to protect communities, livestock, and ecosystems while preparing for future health threats.
