Ministry of Health Launches NCDIs Coordinating Mechanism in Lesotho

The Ministry of Health, led by Honourable Selibe Mochoboroane, officially launched the Non-Communicable Diseases and Injuries (NCDIs) Coordinating Mechanism at Manthabiseng Convention Centre.

The launch aimed to establish a multisectoral NCDI Coordinating Mechanism, raise awareness of NCDIs in Lesotho, and present a roadmap for prevention, detection, control, and treatment of these diseases.

In his opening remarks, Honourable Mochoboroane stressed the importance of teamwork in reducing the impact of NCDIs, particularly in communities at high risk. He highlighted the government’s commitment to multisectoral cooperation to improve public health and ensure better access to services for all citizens.

Dr. ‘Malitaba Litaba outlined national efforts to address NCDIs in Lesotho. She identified challenges including limited funding and a rising number of NCDI cases, especially among vulnerable groups. Dr. Litaba highlighted current Ministry of Health programs aimed at prevention, early detection, and management of NCDIs. She stressed that successful implementation of the NCDI roadmap requires collaboration across sectors, increased community engagement, and continuous awareness campaigns.

Dr. Hailu from the World Health Organisation highlighted the need for early treatment, inclusive policies that prioritise vulnerable populations, and robust health systems to combat NCDIs effectively.

In her closing remarks on behalf of the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Titi thanked all participants for their contributions to the success of the Coordinating Mechanism meeting. She called for joint efforts in the fight against non-communicable diseases and encouraged ongoing collaboration, commitment, and dialogue to ensure effective prevention and control of NCDIs in Lesotho.

The meeting also featured panel discussions involving health professionals and individuals with lived experiences, highlighting the roles various sectors play in reducing NCDI risks and improving health outcomes.
