Lesotho Explores New Higher Education Opportunities with New Generation University College

Lesotho’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, H.E. Ntsiuoa Sekete, has held productive discussions with Dr. Matthew T. Gichile, President and Founder of New Generation University College (NGUC), regarding the institution’s plans to expand into Lesotho. The engagement focused on NGUC’s proposed entry into the country’s higher education sector, aiming to provide internationally relevant academic programs that enhance skills, innovation, and employability among Basotho youth.

Founded in Addis Ababa in 2002, NGUC is a reputable private higher education institution with a strong regional and international presence. The University operates multiple campuses in Ethiopia and internationally in Hargeisa, Somaliland. To date, NGUC has graduated over 45,000 students from more than 35 countries. Its academic offerings include Business, Global Studies and International Relations, Law, Accounting, Computer Science, Human Resources, and TVET programs, among others.

NGUC has earned recognition as a “Center for Excellence” in private education. Its learner-centered approach, small class sizes, and strong industry partnerships have positioned it as a leading choice for students seeking both academic rigor and practical career skills. The institution’s mission focuses on delivering Total Quality Higher Education that equips students with the knowledge and tools required for global competitiveness.

If the Lesotho campus is established, it is expected to deliver multiple benefits: expanding access to higher education for Basotho students, including those from rural and underserved communities; bridging the skills gap by aligning academic programs with local and regional market demands; and promoting youth empowerment through programs in ethical leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

The planned NGUC campus also aims to strengthen Lesotho’s position in the regional higher education landscape. By introducing internationally benchmarked programs and practical training, the institution will contribute to the development of a skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of both local and regional economies.

Discussions between Ambassador Sekete and NGUC highlight Lesotho’s commitment to enhancing its higher education sector and preparing youth for meaningful careers. If realized, the expansion of NGUC into Lesotho will offer a transformative opportunity for students, communities, and the broader national development agenda.
