Government of Lesotho Boosts Support for Farmers with Early Input Delivery and Free Youth Training

The Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Proper Nutrition, Hon. Thabo Mofosi, announced strong government support for Lesotho farmers at a recent press conference in Ha Foso. The Ministry of Agriculture will deliver agricultural inputs earlier than usual to help boost farming productivity.

Starting from 11 August, farmers in Mokhotlong, Qacha’s Nek, and Thaba-Tseka will receive seeds, fertilizers, and herbicides. Other districts will get support soon, with specific dates to be announced.

The government will cover 80% of fertilizer costs and 70% of seed and herbicide costs. This subsidy aims to reduce farming expenses and improve access to quality inputs. The Director of Crops, Mrs. Mamokhoebi Mokuoane, confirmed there is enough seed stock to meet farmers’ demands.

To receive equipment, farmers must present an identity document, a letter of reference from a supervisor, and a field number. Supervisors will guide farmers to equipment locations, and the government will deliver the equipment free of charge.

The Ministry will also offer free training for youth on how to use agricultural machinery. Training will take place at Leribe Agricultural School, Maseru Livestock, and Mohale’s Hoek FTC. Youth near these locations can register from 11 to 29 August.

This plan shows the government’s clear focus on supporting farmers with resources, training, and financial relief to improve food security and agricultural growth in Lesotho.
