Basotho Development Front Empowers Youth Through Social Media Content Creation Competitions

The Bothata Mahlala-led Basotho Development Front (BDF) has taken a significant step in encouraging youth to monetise social media content creation as a way to address the high unemployment rate among young people in Lesotho.
The newly formed political party recently hosted an engaging Facebook competition featuring the popular “Magumba Dance Challenge.” Content creators from across the country participated by submitting videos of themselves performing the Magumba dance, with the winner determined by the highest number of views.
Originating from Sasolburg, South Africa, the Magumba dance is linked to the song “Magumba” by South African DJ, producer, vocalist, and songwriter Khadeair. Known for its unique head movements, the dance has quickly gained traction on social media platforms, making it a perfect choice for the competition.
The contest kicked off on 14 July, culminating with the announcement of the winners on Monday at the BDF office in Maseru. Tholoana Sehloho and her crew emerged victorious in absentia, taking home a cash prize of M5,000.
At the prize-giving event, BDF media team member Tlale Pae highlighted the party’s motivation behind the initiative. “Our leader, Mr Mahlala, recognised the need to facilitate social media monetisation in Lesotho and responded swiftly by launching this competition,” Mr Pae said. “We advocate for youth empowerment and want to show that social media content creation is a viable income-generating tool that can help combat youth unemployment.”
BDF Youth Leader Thato Nkhopea reiterated the party’s commitment to nurturing young talent. “Young people are highly creative, and empowering them remains a core priority for our party and leadership,” she said. Nkhopea also announced that the BDF plans to launch two more competitions shortly, inviting youth to design a BDF blanket and a Seshoeshoe cloth, with each winner set to receive M10,000.
By embracing modern platforms like social media to unlock new economic opportunities, the Basotho Development Front is positioning itself as a champion of youth innovation and empowerment in Lesotho’s evolving political and social landscape.
