Nutritionists Urge Lesotho Youth to Tackle Unemployment Through Agriculture and Nutrition Clubs

As Lesotho continues to grapple with a rising unemployment rate, especially among young people, local nutritionists and community-based nutrition clubs are urging the youth to embrace agriculture as a pathway to both economic empowerment and improved food security.

Among those leading the call is Mrs. Thakane Kutloano, a nutritionist based in Tale, who has voiced concern over the declining interest of young people in agricultural ventures. She highlights the disconnect between youth aspirations and the foundational role of farming in ensuring proper nutrition.

“There are many active nutrition clubs here in Tale,” said Mrs. Kutloano, “but sadly, youth participation remains very low. When I engage with them, they often say they would rather bake cakes or cook meals. What they fail to realize is that good nutrition starts with the soil—gardens and fields where food is grown.”

Her message is clear: cultivating land and growing healthy produce is the first step toward any successful culinary or nutrition-related activity. Without this foundation, efforts to address food insecurity or unemployment lack long-term sustainability.

Nutrition clubs in Tale and surrounding areas have been instrumental in promoting healthy eating habits, food preservation, and community gardening. These grassroots initiatives provide practical skills and support systems for those looking to build self-reliant, nutrition-focused lifestyles. However, Mrs. Kutloano believes the full potential of these programs can only be realized if more young people come on board.

She also emphasized that agriculture is not just manual labor—it’s a business opportunity. From producing vegetables and fruits to processing and marketing organic products, the agricultural value chain holds immense potential for youth entrepreneurship.

By taking part in farming and nutrition clubs, young people in Lesotho can gain the skills needed to not only combat hunger but also create sustainable livelihoods. In the face of a growing job crisis, returning to the land may offer the solution many are seeking.
