NECDOL Trains Principals to Strengthen School Readiness for Lesotho’s Young Learners

In a bid to strengthen early childhood education in Lesotho, the Network of Early Child Development of Lesotho (NECDOL) has conducted a training session for 34 primary school principals from schools that host Reception Centres for five-year-olds. The training aimed to enhance the implementation of the School Readiness Initiative Programme, ensuring young learners are better prepared for formal schooling.

NECDOL Programme Manager, ‘Ma-Lord ‘Mefane, confirmed the training during an interview with the Agency, explaining that the School Readiness Initiative began in 2020 through the support of the Ministry of Education and Training, with funding from the Roger Federer Foundation. The programme focuses on improving the transition from early childhood development to primary education by equipping schools and educators with the necessary tools and knowledge.

“The goal is to assist the Ministry in ensuring that the first year of school—Reception or Pre-primary—rolls out effectively and benefits children across the country,” Ms. ‘Mefane said.

She highlighted that over the past three years, NECDOL has not only worked with schools but also involved communities in efforts to sustain the programme. The organisation believes that successful early education requires collaboration between teachers, principals, and families to create a supportive learning environment.

“The sustainability of the programme depends on shared responsibility,” Ms. ‘Mefane noted. “We continue to empower both schools and communities to take ownership, so that the children’s learning foundation is strong and consistent.”

The School Readiness Initiative focuses on holistic child development, supporting cognitive, emotional, and social growth. The principals’ training emphasized leadership in early education settings, resource management, and strategies for inclusive teaching practices.

With a growing number of Reception Centres being integrated into primary schools nationwide, NECDOL’s continued support plays a vital role in bridging gaps in early learning and improving education outcomes. By capacitating school leaders and promoting community involvement, the programme is laying a strong foundation for Lesotho’s youngest learners to thrive from their very first day in school.
