Lesotho to Compete at 2025 Pan African Mathematics Olympiad in Botswana

Lesotho will proudly be represented at the prestigious Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) 2025, set to take place in Gaborone, Botswana from June 12th to 18th. The annual continental competition brings together some of Africa’s brightest young mathematical minds to showcase their skills in advanced problem-solving and critical thinking.

Lesotho’s national team comprises six outstanding students selected from top-performing secondary schools across the country. Representing the nation will be:

  • Karabo Shao from Leqele High School
  • Karabo Sesinyi from Leribe English Medium High School
  • Tlhohonolofatso Mofammere from Machabeng College
  • Ts’eliso Moletsane from Maseru Private Academy
  • Kuleile Notsi from Maseru Day High School
  • Liteboho Moletsane from New Millennium International School

The team will compete against their peers from across Africa in a series of challenging mathematics tests designed to stretch their abilities and deepen their understanding of the subject.

Speaking to the Agency on Thursday, PAMO Lesotho National President Mr. Keketso Leteba emphasized the importance of the competition in promoting excellence in mathematics education. “The main objective of PAMO is to reinforce Grade 11 students with mathematical subjects, enhance problem-solving abilities, and nurture a passion for mathematics at an early stage,” said Mr. Leteba.

He added that the Olympiad also offers students an opportunity to engage in academic exchange, gain international exposure, and develop confidence in their abilities.

Participation in PAMO is a testament to Lesotho’s commitment to strengthening STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and identifying young talent capable of excelling on the global stage. Over the years, the competition has proven to be a stepping stone for many students who later pursue careers in science, engineering, and research.

The selected students have undergone rigorous training and preparation, with the support of teachers, mentors, and the Ministry of Education. The country hopes their performance will inspire other students to take an interest in mathematics and pursue academic excellence.

As Lesotho heads to Gaborone for PAMO 2025, expectations are high, and the nation stands united behind its young mathematicians, wishing them the best in representing the Mountain Kingdom with pride and excellence.
