Lesotho PM Ntsokoane Matekane Acknowledges Youth Unemployment Crisis, Outlines Government Initiatives

Lesotho’s Prime Minister, Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane, has acknowledged the growing crisis of youth unemployment in the country, with over 50 percent of the young population currently without jobs. Speaking at a press conference held at LTV Studios on Monday, Mr. Matekane emphasized the government’s awareness of the problem and outlined key initiatives aimed at addressing it.
Mr. Matekane stated that the government is taking a labour-intensive approach to ensure that as many young people as possible can secure employment. “We are fully aware of the high unemployment rate facing our youth. It is an urgent matter that requires action,” he said.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the government’s strategy will leverage the diverse knowledge and skills of the youth while focusing on sectors that have the potential to drive employment growth. “We are placing significant emphasis on agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, and technology. These sectors are central to our job creation strategy,” Mr. Matekane explained.
By investing in these industries, the government aims to stimulate economic activity and create sustainable employment opportunities. The agricultural sector, in particular, is seen as a cornerstone for rural job creation, while the manufacturing and tourism sectors offer avenues for rapid expansion and workforce absorption. The technology sector is also being prioritized to equip youth with digital skills that are increasingly in demand.
Mr. Matekane reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering young people through targeted programs and partnerships with both local and international stakeholders. “Our youth are our greatest asset. We will continue to implement initiatives that provide them with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive,” he said.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid growing calls for action to address youth unemployment in Lesotho, which has been exacerbated by global economic challenges and the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the government rolls out these labour-intensive programs, it is expected that more comprehensive policies and funding mechanisms will be introduced to support job creation and entrepreneurship.
The Prime Minister concluded by urging patience and collaboration, noting that while tackling youth unemployment is a complex challenge, it is one that the government is determined to overcome.
