Hundreds of Youth Engage Prime Minister Matekane in Dialogue to Tackle Unemployment

Maseru, Lesotho – Hundreds of young people from across all districts convened at the Manthabiseng Convention Centre on Wednesday for a crucial dialogue with the government, led by Prime Minister Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane. The meeting aimed to create a platform for youth to voice their concerns and propose solutions to the persistent challenge of youth unemployment in Lesotho.
The event, held under the theme “Collective contributions to curb youth unemployment,” brought together key government figures including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Nthomeng Majara, Princess Senate Mohato Seeiso, several ministers, senior officials, and heads of diplomatic missions based in Lesotho.
Prime Minister Matekane welcomed the opportunity to hear directly from young Basotho, emphasizing the government’s commitment to collaborating with youth in crafting sustainable employment solutions.
During the open forum, youth representatives, including those with disabilities, strongly advocated for more permanent employment opportunities within government ministries. They expressed frustration over the prevalence of short-term contracts, commonly known as “lihalahala,” which offer little job security or career growth. Many called on the government to absorb qualified young professionals into permanent roles to harness their skills and provide stability.
Several participants also proposed that the government organize job fairs similar to the popular Basotho Flea Market. Such events, they argued, would offer young people a platform to showcase their talents, skills, and qualifications, while facilitating direct networking with potential employers and businesses.
The inclusive nature of the dialogue allowed voices from diverse backgrounds and regions to be heard, reinforcing the urgent need for a multifaceted approach to youth unemployment. Officials acknowledged these insights as vital to shaping policies that not only create jobs but also nurture entrepreneurship and skill development.
This engagement marks an important step in Lesotho’s efforts to address one of its most pressing socio-economic challenges. As the government pledges to work hand-in-hand with youth, hopes remain high that these collective contributions will translate into effective programs and meaningful job opportunities across the country.
