Prime Minister Matekane Brings Hope to Thaba-Tseka Through Wheelchair and School Supply Donations

Prime Minister Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane visited the Thaba-Tseka District on Thursday, where he made generous donations aimed at improving both education and the quality of life for vulnerable individuals. The visit, which was part of the Ministry of Education and Training’s “Back to School” initiative, saw 315 students in the Bokong area receive essential school supplies, including books and uniforms.

In addition to supporting students, the Prime Minister also donated food items such as maize meal, rice, and wheat flour. Girls received hygiene packs to support their personal wellbeing and school attendance, and five individuals with mobility challenges were gifted electric wheelchairs.

Among the wheelchair recipients was Miss Mathatha Sekonyela, a 30-year-old woman from Khokhoba Bokong. In an emotional interview, she expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Prime Minister for the life-changing gift. “It will now be possible to get going without someone pushing me. This machine gives me freedom I have not had in years,” she said.

Miss Sekonyela shared that her inability to walk began in 2000 and that the cost of a modern wheelchair was far beyond her reach. “I never thought I would ever own a wheelchair like this. It is very expensive, and I could not afford it,” she added, expressing her renewed hope and independence.

Addressing the crowd during the event, Prime Minister Matekane highlighted the importance of education and inclusive support. He encouraged students to take their studies seriously and appreciate the opportunities being provided. “It is the government’s responsibility to ensure that educational support, infrastructure, and quality teachers are available, as these are the foundations that will help us produce capable students who will be able to tackle the challenges faced by our society,” he said.

He also expressed hope that the donations will inspire beneficiaries to work hard and remain committed to their goals. The donation drive, which began in Thaba-Tseka, is expected to extend to other districts across Lesotho, with the goal of reaching more vulnerable communities.

The event was attended by several high-ranking government officials, including the Minister of Education and Training, Professor Ntoi Rapapa, and the Minister of Employment and Labour, Honourable Ts’eliso Mokhosi, underscoring the government’s unified commitment to empowering citizens through education and social support.
