Lesotho’s Director of Trade Highlights Global Economic Concerns During Diplomatic Consultations

Maseru, Lesotho — During the recent Diplomatic Consultations, the Director of Trade from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Business Development delivered a detailed overview of international trade issues, presenting Lesotho’s perspective on shifting geopolitical dynamics and their impact on global economic relations.

The high-level engagement brought together foreign envoys, policymakers, and international trade experts to discuss key economic trends, trade partnerships, and regional cooperation. In a pivotal address, the Director outlined the government’s position on pressing trade matters, emphasizing the need for balanced, inclusive economic strategies in an increasingly uncertain global environment.

As global trade continues to face disruptions from geopolitical tensions, supply chain instability, and evolving regional alliances, Lesotho reaffirmed its commitment to open trade, multilateralism, and economic diplomacy. The Director noted that small and developing economies like Lesotho are particularly vulnerable to external shocks, making strategic international cooperation more critical than ever.

“Our economic well-being is intertwined with the global marketplace. Current geopolitical developments — from regional conflicts to changing trade alliances — pose both risks and opportunities for Lesotho’s growth and stability,” the Director said. “It is essential that we adapt with agility, promote regional trade integration, and ensure that our policies safeguard national interests while supporting international collaboration.”

The consultations also touched on trade-related challenges such as tariff reforms, digital trade barriers, and the need for stronger protections for least developed countries (LDCs) within global trade frameworks. The Director underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and deepening engagement with international bodies such as the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Key focus areas included:

  • Strengthening regional trade within the Southern African Development Community (SADC)
  • Promoting value addition in exports to improve Lesotho’s global competitiveness
  • Encouraging sustainable trade practices in alignment with climate and development goals
  • Advocating for equitable access to global markets for landlocked and resource-limited economies

The address concluded with a call to action for diplomatic missions and international partners to continue supporting Lesotho’s trade ambitions through investment, capacity building, and knowledge sharing. Emphasis was also placed on the importance of youth empowerment and innovation in driving a resilient trade future.

With the Diplomatic Consultations setting the tone for enhanced cooperation, Lesotho has signaled its readiness to navigate complex economic shifts while ensuring its voice is heard on the global stage. The country’s proactive trade stance positions it as a constructive partner in building a fairer, more resilient global economy.
