Lesotho Launches Arms Trade Treaty Awareness Day in Berea

BEREA – In a significant step towards promoting peace, transparency, and responsible arms management, Lesotho officially launched the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) Awareness Day on 28 May 2025. The event was held at Aloes Guest House in Berea and was spearheaded by the Chief Secretary of the Branch of Defence, Mrs. Limpho Nchephe Motanyane, alongside Brigadier Mathajane.

The launch marks Lesotho’s commitment to aligning with global standards in regulating the trade of conventional weapons, a key objective of the Arms Trade Treaty, which seeks to curb illegal arms transfers, reduce violence, and ensure that weapons do not fall into the wrong hands.

In her keynote address, Mrs. Motanyane emphasized the importance of public awareness and institutional cooperation in upholding the principles of the treaty. “The Arms Trade Treaty is more than an international obligation. It is a tool for protecting our communities, our sovereignty, and future generations from the dangers of unregulated weapons,” she said.

She highlighted that the ATT supports national and regional efforts to prevent armed conflict and criminal violence, especially in Southern Africa where porous borders can facilitate the illegal flow of arms.

Brigadier Mathajane added that the Lesotho Defence Force and relevant security agencies are committed to ensuring that arms trade activities are monitored and strictly controlled. “This initiative is not just about compliance—it is about responsibility. We must ensure that every weapon in circulation serves a legitimate, accountable purpose,” he noted.

The launch event was attended by representatives from the security sector, civil society, international development partners, and local government officials. Discussions focused on the treaty’s implementation, challenges facing the control of arms flow in the region, and the role of public awareness in combating illegal arms trade.

Lesotho’s observance of the Arms Trade Treaty Awareness Day will now serve as an annual platform to educate stakeholders, review progress, and strengthen inter-agency collaboration. The Ministry of Defence indicated that similar events will be rolled out across other districts to deepen understanding of the ATT’s impact and relevance.

As global attention continues to focus on peace, disarmament, and sustainable development, Lesotho’s active role in promoting the Arms Trade Treaty signals a strong national stance against the dangers of uncontrolled arms proliferation.
