Lesotho Hosts Diplomatic Consultations to Strengthen Foreign Missions and Economic Diplomacy

Lesotho is currently hosting a pivotal round of diplomatic consultations aimed at aligning the work of its foreign missions with the country’s national development goals. The event brings together Heads of Lesotho’s diplomatic missions from across the globe for strategic discussions on enhancing international relations, attracting foreign investment, and fostering private sector growth.

The Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Hon. Lejone Mpotjoane, officially opened the consultations, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy in advancing national interests. In his opening remarks, Hon. Mpotjoane highlighted the need for Lesotho’s diplomats to shift focus toward outcomes that boost the country’s economic and investment agenda, especially in the current global economic climate.

A central highlight of the consultations was an address by Mr. Chaba Mokuku, the Chief Executive of the Competitiveness and Financial Inclusion (CAFI) project. Mr. Mokuku shared valuable insights on the state of Lesotho’s investment climate and underscored the need for targeted efforts to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). His presentation sparked an engaging discussion on how Lesotho’s diplomatic missions can strengthen private sector participation to make a meaningful impact on the national economy.

“Our missions must be empowered with the right tools, partnerships, and information to promote Lesotho as a competitive and investor-friendly destination,” Mr. Mokuku stated. He also stressed the importance of enhancing financial inclusion and facilitating private sector-led growth through diplomatic channels.

The event is part of an ongoing CAFI-led initiative supported by GDP Global, a UK-based economic development consultancy. This project, in collaboration with the Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC) and the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC), aims to strengthen Lesotho’s economic diplomacy through capacity-building and strategic promotion.

Ministry officials are actively engaging in training and policy sessions designed to align the objectives of foreign missions with Lesotho’s broader economic aspirations. The initiative aims to ensure that embassies and consulates serve as active platforms for trade, tourism, and investment promotion.

The diplomatic consultations not only offer a platform for dialogue among High Commissioners and Ambassadors but also mark a strategic turning point in how Lesotho approaches its global engagements. With the growing emphasis on economic diplomacy, the country is positioning itself to better leverage its international footprint to unlock economic opportunities and enhance national prosperity.
