Lesotho and EU Celebrate Stronger Ties as Europe Marks 75 Years Since Schuman Declaration

As Europe commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration—a historic milestone that laid the foundation for the European Union—the Kingdom of Lesotho and the EU are celebrating their deepening and fruitful partnership. The anniversary has provided a meaningful backdrop for the annual Lesotho-EU Partnership Dialogue and ongoing #EuropeMonth activities, both of which highlight a commitment to shared values such as democracy, unity, and sustainable development.

The Schuman Declaration, first proposed on 9 May 1950 by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, envisioned a new form of political and economic cooperation in Europe. Today, that vision lives on not only in Europe’s institutions but also in the EU’s external partnerships. For Lesotho, this anniversary presents an opportunity to reflect on the evolving relationship with the EU—one that has grown in scope and significance over the decades.

In Maseru, officials from the Government of Lesotho and representatives of the EU Delegation gathered to mark Europe Month, a celebration that honours the values and vision that have guided the EU since its inception. Central to the month’s activities was the annual Lesotho-EU Partnership Dialogue, a platform that fosters open discussion and collaboration on key areas such as governance, climate action, human rights, and inclusive economic growth.

This year’s dialogue reaffirmed both parties’ commitment to sustainable development and inclusive policies. The EU continues to be a key development partner for Lesotho, supporting sectors like health, education, agriculture, and social protection. Recent EU initiatives in the country include funding for green energy projects, support for civil society, and efforts to strengthen public financial management.

Lesotho’s Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed appreciation for the EU’s ongoing support, noting that the partnership is rooted in mutual respect and shared priorities. “The values celebrated during Europe Month—peace, democracy, and solidarity—resonate strongly with our national vision,” he said. “The EU has stood by Lesotho in advancing these goals.”

Ambassadors and EU representatives emphasized the importance of maintaining open dialogue and strengthening cooperation, particularly in a world facing growing global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and technological transformation. They noted that Lesotho’s strategic vision aligns closely with the EU’s focus on sustainable development, green growth, and inclusive governance.

The celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration serves as a reminder that unity and partnership remain vital not only within Europe but also across continents. For Lesotho and the EU, it is an opportunity to deepen a relationship based on common aspirations, and to continue working together toward a more just, peaceful, and sustainable future.
